Which redwoods park is the best

Among the four combined redwood parks, these two trails are easily among the best and most pristine. At less than one mile round-trip, Stout Grove is short but packs a punch. Here you can walk inside the trees as well as alongside them. For a longer trek and even greater remoteness, head two miles south on Holland Hill Road for the five-mile Boy Scout trail. Like the park itself, both of these hikes are among the least developed and visited, while granting the closest access to the trees and fauna, such as carpets of red-flowering currant pictured , which you can only find in this part of the world.

Both come highly recommended, usually have surprisingly availability, and accept reservations do it far in advance—Californians love their camping at reservecalifornia. For even more scenery on a lesser-traveled road, and for and closer views of the Pacific Ocean, turn west just after Klamath onto Coastal Drive pictured , right as you begin to descend into Prairie Creek State Park. The six mile dirt road also accessible by car is a tranquil way to pair the trees with the nearby sea.

Of the four redwood parks, Prairie Creek is arguably home to the largest collection of well-rated long hikes. Top-rated Fern Canyon is an easy one-mile loop through foot fern-covered walls with a creek and waterfall. Grizzly Giant is the biggest in the grove and is over 2, years old.

This grove can be incredibly busy when it is open though, as are most attractions in Yosemite. While not as overall impressive as Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Grove is one of my favorite groves in Yosemite because it is much less crowded and is a great one to snowshoe to during the winter. There are a lot of big trees here, and it even has a tree that you can walk through, which is fun for pictures. Named after the first lady, this grove is one of the northernmost on this list.

I love the way the coastal fog moves in and out of these trees as it creates an air of mystery and a great photo opportunity. This grove is so beautiful with of all the green and browns, and with the small growths that weave in and out of the trees. There is a collection of downed, hollow, and giant trees here as well. Located in Sonoma County, only about 45 minutes from Muir Woods, the Armstrong Redwoods are a great place to explore with only a fraction of the crowds.

The two miles of trails here weave in and out of the forest and past three large trees. The Colonel Armstrong Tree is the largest in the grove, and it is impressive.

If you have spent time driving the famous Pacific Coast Highway, then you have no doubt marveled at the massive coastal views along Big Sur. There are a few trails here, and the largest tree is the Colonial Tree.
