Less hunting for focu s: STM lenses tend to track better when photographing moving subjects. Cheaper build quality: STM lenses are an amateur-grade option and are built to reflect that. They are not weather-sealed and are constructed with plastic and lower quality glass. Looking for help? USM lenses also offer smoother manual focusing, given the mechanical connection between the focus ring and the focusing mechanism.

This is important for photographers who frequently manual focus—such as macro and landscape shooters. This is key for videographers who need to keep footage as buttery smooth as possible. STM lenses, on the other hand, are somewhat slower. And I recommend STM lenses for any videographers searching for the smoothest, quietest focusing experience. Both USM and STM lenses are excellent focusing mechanisms, and both can work well for still photography and videography. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

Canon Focusing Technology. When we look at a photograph or movie, one of the first things that we notice is whether it is in focus or not. Since , when Canon became the first company to integrate a focusing motor inside the lens, mulitple motors have been introduced that are designed to acquire and track focus for fast moving subjects.

All while retaining control for focus accuracy, smoothness and silence. There are currently three main types of focusing motor technologies used within Canon lenses. STM lenses shoot great photos and even better videos. Whilst some motors used in lenses make very audible and distracting mechanical noises when they focus, STM lenses focus quietly, allowing you to record more of what you naturally hear in an environment.

Canon's STM technology provides a range of extremely quiet lenses that are still fast enough to capture photos in most scenarios. Common to all USM motors is the fact that that they convert ultrasonic vibration energy into rotational force to move the lens. This is the currently the fastest focusing motor in the Canon range, yet it allows you to still manually fine-tune focus without having to switch off autofocus completely. The USM motor is powerful enough to drive heavy lens groups in large telephoto lenses quickly and easily, while still being able to avoid the need for a gear system to reduce the speed.

USM motors also exhibit high levels of holding power so that once the motor is switched off, the focusing lens group is held in place without any further input needed. The ring-type USM mechanism is composed of a rotor and a stator — an elastic body with a piezo-electric ceramic voltage element attached to it. USM provides the driving force behind the blisteringly fast auto focus acquisition and tracking performance needed for wildlife and sports photography. With a micro USM motor, the rotor, stator and drive gear are combined into one unit roughly half the weight of a ring-type USM motor.

Nano USM is Canon's latest innovation in focusing technology. The features of this type of motor make it ideally suited for capturing fast action and movies where quiet and smooth focus are the ideal characteristics for focus.

Inside the Nano USM unit is an elastic metal body, ceramic voltage element and drive unit. The application and adjustment of voltage to the ceramic element, controls the direction and speed of the drive unit. The result is a focusing system that gives you a smooth focus with fine speed control.
