Why does my gpu clock drop
I need to say: i've cleaned my laptop before, there isn't dust. THis is driving me crazy, because formatting make my laptop runs my games without problems. Then it is something that is being Reinstalled by you after the Formatting. But Im telling you that the CPU is getting to hot. Im telling you that the GPU is being throttled. HEAT will cause performance drops.
Throttling will cause performance drops. Throttling will happen until the heat is relieved and performance will return. This can cause it to go up and down. It likely performs the Same if you unplug the laptop.
Might actually be better. Greybear, i know that's throttling. My question is: why formatting makes my laptop stops throttling? It could be a software problem? If so, which programs could cause this? I only use developer tools and some games. There isn't malware in the laptop. Ps: it could be a direct issue?
Because the problem seems to start when i try to play a game that installs a directx update when i run it for the first time. Thats just it, there is nothing that stands out except the GPU Tweak II, but it appears to be uninstalled or not even running. Feb I used to play games without problems, but one day my GPU clock started to drop. I'm using acer drivers, and i've tried a few things max performance, clean temp files, clean hardware, even undervolt.
The only thing that appears to work is formatting the laptop, but in a few days the problem starts again. It seems to happen less frequently at lower clock speeds, but MHz isnt fixing it for me. Seconded on unstable overclock.
The black screen you're seeing is Windows TDR taking over and resetting its entire graphics stack because it detected something is wrong. At this point, the card is initialized in a low-power 3D mode and you cannot change it until you reboot the computer. I have this same problem. My card does the same thing while playing crysis 2. I have many other games and it has done it in the past on a higher overclock. I lowered my overclock untill the problem has stopped. It worked well for months.
Now that I am playing Crysis 2 the problem has come back for me. Does not even seem worth it anymore. I run the MSI afterburner software rivatuner. Maybe I should not be overclocking an aready factory overclocked card. If It does it on factory settings then I guess I have a whole new problem.
Edit: The factory overclock seems to be stable enough. I will just run on factory settings. It seems that MSI got the most stable overclock they could and I was wrong to think I could do better then they could. Prefer Maximum Performance should solve this issue. If it doesn't, revert drivers. Please use the search function, as this question has been asked a good 4 dozen times since I last came back to the forums about a year ago. I have exactly the same issue for more than years now.
I have started investigating this issue since "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error and tried everithing I have found these years.
I have tried using maximum performance setting as well as many versions of drivers. The thing is that not every game causes this in the way of performance the game needs - I had no problem playing FarCry3 on almost best perf. As well as Mass effect 2 runs much more better than the first one. Your card overheating causing the issue has nothing to do with the issue this person had, it was a driver issue. Also, this topic is over 3 years old like you noticed after, so I'd suggest posting a new topic of you want help with your issues if you're having any you'd like more help with.
It is clearly a driver issue since reverting to an older version fixes this issue for me sometimes. Rolling back your drivers will only temporarily fix the issue. A lot of older GPU have low temperature throttle limits. Mine had it at 70 degrees C. Even if this is a safe temperature, once it hits this value the clock speed will automatically throttle down to MHz. Sadly the only way to fix this is to have better cooling.
